Costly Catastrophe Nearly Ruins Couples Wedding Day

Posted: Updated:

It's the news no engaged couple wants to hear: the invitations are out-,the RSVP's are back...and suddenly your reception hall goes dark.

The owner of the venue wasn't paying his electric bill, which leaves the not so happy couple in a state of shock.

Kevin Rivera and his fiancee Christy Linn were in happier times before they found out their wedding reception banquet hall was closed for business.

"What are we going to do? We thought that was the one secure thing that we had," Rivera said.

Linn said, "This is my wedding day. You know, it may not be a big deal to you, but it is to me!"

The couple had planned a "Vintage Hollywood" themed reception at Lou Ferretti's Mori's restaurant at the Landis Theatre. Christy's folks had put down a quarter of the 84-hundred dollar price tag this summer, and the couple came back for a menu tasting. Days later the place suddenly closed September 20th.

Turns out, the restaurant owner had fallen months behind on his electric bill, so the city-owned utility cut off the juice.

When the couple signed the paperwork, the say there wasn't any indication at all from Mr. Ferretti that there was any kind of financial trouble underway.

The couple managed to find a replacement venue, but Kevin and Christy say they hadn't heard a word from Ferretti since the closure, and they'd like to get their 21-hundred dollar deposit back.

"It's kind of a long shot, but it would certainly be ...fantastic! It's hard to swallow just throwing that away," Linn said.

FOX 29's Bruce Gordon found the restaurant owner at his home in Williamstown.

Ferretti told him he's still working to re-open by the 25th. But I reminded him that's a long shot, given the size of that overdue electric bill, and that Kevin and Christy had to put money down on a new venue.

His response:

"They'll be refunded," Ferretti said. "Yeah, absolutely. Anybody who has deposits will be refunded."

Christy's thrilled that we could find Ferretti and extract that promise. we'll stay on this to make sure he keeps that promise. Consider it our wedding gift to Kevin and Christy.
