A judge has halted New York City's plan to create a uniform fleet of yellow cabs by ordering owners to buy a minivan-style vehicle dubbed the "Taxi of Tomorrow."
Tuesday's ruling comes just three weeks before cab owners were to be required to start phasing in the new, Nissan-made taxis. City lawyers plan to appeal.
The decision is the latest in a series of lawsuits challenging the new cabs on various grounds.
In this case, the Greater New York Taxi Association and a cab owner said the city Taxi and Limousine Commission overstepped its authority by dictating a particular model of car.
Manhattan state Supreme Court Justice Shlomo Hagler agreed.
The city and Nissan says the chosen cab, the Nissan NV-200, boasts extraordinary safety and other features.
