MONROE COUNTY, Ga. -

A man tried to make a break for it after being sentenced at the Monroe County Courthouse on Wednesday.

Authorities said it all began when 36-year-old Jeffery Sligh was sentenced to 20 years in prison on charges that he burned down a house and stole a four-wheeler.

Once the sentence was read, police said that Sligh ran out of the court room to his truck, which was parked outside. Authorities said that Sligh only made it four blocks before he lost control and flipped the truck on its side.

When deputies stopped to check on Sligh's condition, police say the suspect jumped into the deputy's vehicle and drove off.

Slight led deputies on a chase that lasted about a mile, only stopping after a cruiser crashed into him as he tried to get on Interstate 75.

Authorities then finally took Sligh back into custody.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says shots were fired, but no one was injured.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case. Investigators are trying to determine if Sligh planned the escape in advance.
