ATLANTA -

A sophisticated home surveillance system caught an armed thief in the act of stealing a Mercedes in Midtown Atlanta.

Brad Edmonds said that he went outside around 8 p.m. one night to pull his trash cans off the curb and was confronted by a man.

The suspect, armed with a gun, walked Edmonds to the front door and demanded the keys to Edmonds' Mercedes.

"We went in the house. I had a friend sitting there. The gun was drawn on him, and then so I ducked in the half-bath," Edmonds said.

As Edmonds called 911, the robber found the keys and manually opened the gate. The suspect then wrecked the vehicle attempted to get it out of the driveway.

Police in DeKalb County said they found the Mercedes abandoned in a local parking lot. The vehicle will be returned to Edmonds after it is processed.

Edmonds said the attempted theft has made him second-guess his decision to live near Piedmont Park.

"We have to be able to enjoy it," Edmonds said. "There is a new couple that moved down the street with two little kids. They walk everywhere. They have that right, and we have the right."

Anyone who recognizes the thief is urged to contact police.
