Wayne tenants forced to live with next-door hoarders' smell

Posted: Updated:
WAYNE, Mich. (WJBK) -

Tenants in a Wayne apartment complex have had enough of a deceased hoarders mess that still has not been cleaned up five months after the person's death. Elevator service is also spotty, and leaky pipes line the hallways.

Jim Wictor says he lives in the apartment next to the hoarder's and that piles of clothes, boxes and other personal items still have not been cleaned up. "There's mice, there's rats. There's cat liter everywhere," he shows Fox 2's Taryn Asher. "It smells real bad!"

Other tenants in the building have noticed the smell, too. The apartments are separated but are all connected by the same vent that's supposed to circulate fresh air, but instead, is circulating the foul odor. One resident has had enough and is moving out.

"I can't handle it - the leaks, the smell, you get smell on each of the floors and it's just bad," Margaret Pulley says.

Residents living with these undesirable conditions say they have called and complained but nothing gets changed.

"The management company came about a month and a half ago and they said, 'Well we'll have it taken care of in a couple weeks.' Then I talked to the fire chief, he said by last Friday it would be taken care of, and still no response," Wictor says.

Fox 2 placed calls to the complex's management and emergency maintenance. However, the calls were after business hours and we are still waiting for a response.
