Atlanta officers buy basketball hoop, sports gear to help kids

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Some resourceful Atlanta police officers dipped into their own funds to help solve a community problem.

After noticing a number of fights among neighborhood kids over a single basketball goal, officers used their own money to buy another goal and other sports equipment for kids living in the Brentwood Apartment complex in southwest Atlanta.

Officer Rasoul Momani rounded up fellow officers in Zone 4 to make the donation, which included the basketball hoop, basketballs and footballs.   A former security guard also donated a portable basketball hoop.

The officers say they wanted to help by giving the kids another place to play, instead of leaving them to walk through a whole neighborhood to find and open hoop.  They say they want to show kids they don't need to be afraid of the police, and that officers there are really "all about everybody."
