Young Man Barricaded Inside Home In North Philadelphia

Posted: Updated:

Police say a young man is holed up in a North Philadelphia home. There are no reports of injuries, but neighbors have been told to shelter in place on Sunday.

SWAT teams were on scene trying to diffuse the situation and protect people who live nearby.

Police safely evacuated the housemates of a gunman barricaded in a standoff that began around 9:00a.m.  on the 1800 block of Willington Street for several hours.

"I just was taking my little niece and nephew to the playground and for them 7 and 6 years old to have to witness something like this is just unbelievable in our community," Leslie Jones said.

Cell phone video sent in to FOX 29 by a neighbor shows SWAT teams gathering behind an armored vehicle in the street shielding residents forced to stay inside most of the day. The video also shows police covering the basement window to block the gunman's view.

"I feel like we're being held hostage in our homes. We can't come out. We can't come to the windows," Angel Harris told FOX 29 by phone while on lockdown.

Police had several streets blocked off as negotiators communicated with the suspect.

Investigators say he has a history of mental illness and may have barricaded himself in because of relationship troubles.

Police say the gunman indicated he did not want to hurt anyone. Negotiators were working to convince him he was safe with the goal of a peaceful resolution.
