Charities receive $11M for Yarnell firefighters

Posted: Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) - Charities have collected more than $11 million to help the families of 19 firefighters killed in June's Yarnell Hill wildfire on top of the state and federal benefits they are entitled to receive.

That still may leave the 13 members of Prescott's Granite Mountain Hotshots who were part-time employees with less compensation than the other members of the crew.

But the chairman of the Arizona House committee that heard the report Tuesday says providing equitable benefits to those families is likely going to require more donations. Rep. Justin Pierce says it's clear that giving state money to those families will run afoul of the state constitution's ban on gifts of public funds.

Pierce says he thinks it will be easy to make up the shortfall by asking for more donations.
