Surrounded by her family and members of the elite Highway Patrol Officer Brian Lorenzo's widow left the courthouse with a strong show of support just moments after hearing the man charged with her husband's death plead guilty to third degree murder and other charges.

"Other than bringing Brian back, this is the most positive outcome that could ever happen to that tragedy. It saves the family a lot of anguish," said Fraternal Order of Police President John McNesby.

"At least the family's going to be spared a trial, and that's very important," said Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey.

The veteran highway patrol officer was killed 15 months ago when 47-year-old John Leck Jr. of Levittown, drove his car the wrong way down I-95 and plowed into Lorenzo as he was riding his motorcycle home following his night shift.

State Police testified Leck's blood alcohol was more than twice the legal limit.

"He's obviously intoxicated, driving the wrong way on a highway kills Officer Lorenzo. If it hadn't been Lorenzo, it would have been somebody else," Ramsey told Fox 29.

According to investigators, Leck had been drinking at a TGI Friday's in Bucks County before the accident.

Investigators believe he may have also stopped at another location before the fatal crash. Investigators say Officer Lorenzo never had a chance.

"He never knew what hit him, just hearing the details of it, it's startling, no words can describe it," McNesby said.

Leck's trial on the third degree murder charges, DUI and homicide by vehicle was supposed to start Tuesday.

He will now face sentencing in December. He could be ordered to serve 25 to 50 years behind bars.

"Hopefully December 2nd the judge will really throw the book at him and put him away," McNesby added. When asked what sentence Lecks should get, McNesby said, "the maximum."

"There is no sentence you can give that will bring Officer Lorenzo back unfortunately, but this individual should not go free anytime soon," Ramsey said.

Officer Lorenzo's family did not wish to speak with reporters.
