'Quincy' tenants going without water for more than two weeks now

DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

Fox 2 first told you about the problems at Quincy Apartments a couple of weeks ago. At that point the water had been off for days because the new owner didn't take care of a nearly two thousand dollar water bill. Since then, the debt has been paid but the problems continue.

Nicole Williams is one of several tenants at the complex that has been without water for more than two weeks.

"We gotta take care of our hygiene, brush our teeth you know. Cook - we need water to cook with. We need water to do everything," Williams tells Fox 2's Randy Wimbley.

The city turned the water back on last week after the bill was paid, but now someone has stripped the piping throughout the building.

"If you turn the water on right now in the basement it's going to leak from the top apartment all the way down to the basement, really bad, because there are no pipes,"

Tenants like Williams have had to buy gallons upon gallons of water to get by. "We pay our money every month, on time, for rent, and we shouldn't be forced to have to live like this," Williams adds.

But the property management company says most tenants are behind on their rent and some are being evicted for it. On top of that, the company claims tenants are allowing people to steal the copper piping. The management company released a statement saying:

"We have been to the property these times in the past week and the tenants continue to allow people in to steal all the copper piping. We have provided a quote to replace the plumbing that is now going to cost the owner over 10k to repair. In addition to this, you need to be aware that four of the five tenants are being evicted for non payment prior to any of these problems. We are not sure what the owner is going to do at this point. I am not sure what angle you are going to take with your story but I hope you are fair. The owner did come through with the water but now has to try to come up with the money to repair all the stolen plumbing. In the mean time, most of the tenants have not paid rent for over four months."

"Right now, they're telling the people everybody in the building, 'If you wanna move out you can go ahead and move out,' because they don't know when they're going to get the situation taken care of," Williams explains. "We shouldn't have to go through this, and we shouldn't have to just pack up and move we don't have nowhere to go."

Fox 2 contacted the mayor's office to find out if the city could demand anything of the property management company or the property owner. We are still waiting for a response.
