Frozen Fruits & Veggies Could Retain More Nutrients

When it comes to fruits and vegetables, the popular idea has been that fresh is always better. However, as FOX Medical Team's Deena Centofanti explains, what's in the freezer aisle at the grocery store may sometimes be better.

The idea is that the fruits and vegetables in the produce section may not be as "fresh" as you think. Some stores use those fine mist sprayers to give them that "just picked" look, but the reality is that sometimes those fruits and veggies have been held in storage for a month before you buy it. Then it sits in your fridge days before you eat it. Not so fresh after all.

On the other hand, according to the studies, the vegetables and fruits sold in the frozen section are usually chilled soon after harvest and retain higher vitamins and antioxidants until they're eaten.

Two teams, one from Leatherhead Food Research and another from the University Of Chester in the United Kingdom, carried out 40 tests to compare nutrient levels in produce sitting in a fridge for three days versus the frozen equivalent.

They found that frozen broccoli, carrots and sprouts had higher levels of Vitamin C, lutein and beta-carotene. While the studies were independent, they were funded by the British Frozen Food Federation, which speaks for the UK frozen food industry producers.
