ALLENTOWN, Pa. -

An Allentown toddler is in critical condition after she was hit by a car while crossing the street.

It happened just steps from her front door. Witnesses say she was chasing after her grandmother who was heading to the store.

Fox 29''s Kelly Hessedal went to Allentown where she spoke to friends of the little girl's family.

Her name is Annabelle, and she's just 3-years-old. She's lying in a hospital bed hooked up to a respirator. Her tiny body is trying to recover after she was hit by a car Wednesday night around 630p.m.

Melissa Hunsicker is a close friend of the family. She rushed to the scene at the 700 block of St. John Street.

She says Annabelle had somehow gotten out of her home and was chasing after her grandmother who was headed to the store across the street.

"She saw her going between two parked cars, saw the whole thing. She's beyond traumatized," Hunsicker said.

Neighbor Raenese Figgs said she'll never forget the sound of the girl's grandmother screaming.

"I saw baby in the street with grandma on the ground. She wasn't moving it was awful," Figgs said.

Annabelle suffered head trauma, broken bones, and a damaged spleen. Police say the driver never stopped to help her, she just kept going.

"We were able to come up with an offender vehicle and identify a possible driver of the vehicle," Chief Jorge Medero of the Allentown Police Department said.

City surveillance cameras played a key role in this case.

"This person should have turned themselves in. You made a mistake but you don't keep going," Figgs said.

Police say April Frame of Salisbury has been arrested for hitting the 3-year-old with her car.

Frame faces a long list of charges including Accident Involving Death or Injury and Failure to Render Aid.
