Bald eagles nesting in tree on development site in NJ

Time may be running out for a pair of bald eagles in Ridgefield Park, N.J. For the past three years, the eagles have made their home in a large nest high atop a group of old cotton-wood trees near Route 46.

Stephen Quinn, with the local Environmental Commission, has been monitoring the birds' movements since they arrived in 2010.

The eagles have chosen a parcel of land that is owned by Skymark, a developer that plans a 40-acre retail and residential hot spot on the site.

Quinn said the local Environmental Commission and the town's planning board are in favor of the project moving forward, but they want Skymark to look at some options to be able to keep the eagles in their natural habitat.

Quinn said one idea is to subdivide the property and create an eagle preserve off limits to people.

In 2007, bald eagles were taken off the federal endangered species list. But they are still considered endangered in the state of New Jersey.

The Skymark development manager told northjersey.com that developers would be happy to meet with the Environmental Commission to consider ideas to keep the eagles in place.

For decades, making some quick cash was the main drive behind so many who took the ride down the parkway to Atlantic City. But with so much to choose from nowadays, it looks like Atlantic City is in a lot of trouble.
