Mother charged after child nearly chokes on hot dog

LITHONIA, Ga. -

A 4-year-old child was transported to the hospital after apparently choking on a hot dog in Lithonia, according to police.

Authorities have determined that four children were home without adult supervision when the youngest child began to choke. One of the other children ran outside to get help.

"As I pulled into the driveway, the oldest child ran out of the house saying, ‘My sister is choking on a hot dog and she's about to die,'" said Chris Fortune.

Fortune said he and his brother went into the home and used the Heimlich maneuver in an unsuccessful attempt to get the hot dog dislodged. Fortune said he went next door to get his wife, who has experience in the medical field.

"I opened her mouth, cleaned her out to see if I could see anything because they were saying she choked on a hot dog," said Faheemah Khabeer. "I didn't see anything in her throat and by that paramedics pulled up."

The child was airlifted to a local hospital, where she is in an intensive care unit, according to DeKalb County police.

Police detained the child's mother, identified as 35-year-old Vivian White, when she arrived at the house. According to FOX 5's George Franco, authorities are charging White with second-degree cruelty to children.

The other three children – aged 5, 7 and 10 – who were at the home have been placed in the custody of family members, Franco reports.
