Lenovo And Ashton Kutcher’s New Yoga Tablets: A Better Way?

Posted: Updated:

Tuesday night, Lenovo made official its Yoga tablets and its partnership with actor, entrepreneur and social media mogul Ashton Kutcher. The man most recently known for his film role as Apple's Messiah, was on stage in an effort to lead a competing brand to the promised land. Keeping with the cliche, Kutcher came down from the mountain with two tablets that, quite frankly, may be just what many consumers are looking for this Christmas, the Yoga 8" and Yoga 10" tablets.

Lenovo's new tablets feature a unique, though not a first, design which remains consistent with their Yoga line of Ultrabooks by utilizing a large cylindrical shape along one edge which houses a massive battery that Lenovo is promising will get you 18 hours and recharge your other devices eschewing the need for you to carry around that spare battery brick many of us have become accustomed to being chained to. The specs on the devices are not bad at all, especially at their price points. For $249 or $299 you get and 8" or 10" tablet with a quad-core 1.2GHz cortex A7 processor, 1GB RAM, 16GB storage with microSDHC (expandable up to 64GB), front firing stereo speakers which feature Dolby Digital Plus technology and a 1280×800 IPS display. In a year where we're seeing full HD displays, it's somewhat disappointing to see what is essentially a 720P panel but having tested it out with Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Plants Vs. Zombies 2, the image quality definitely doesn't disappoint. You also get a 5MP camera on the back and 1.6MP front camera and BT 4.0.

The devices are both running a modified version of Android 4.2 with the defining feature of the product line being a multimode use made possible by the large cylinder at one edge which houses a kickstand. The modes are Tilt Mode, Stand Mode and Hold Mode. For Tilt Mode you just rest the tablet on a flat surface and the cylinder props it up at an angle that makes it more comfortable for typing. If you need to you can flip out the kickstand for a little more angle. If the stand is already out, just turn the Yoga around and, stand it up, then for that late night reading, just flip the stand back in and you're in Hold Mode. You'll see all three modes demonstrated in the video below.

My only issue with the device, according to one demo artist at the event the Yoga tablets will only be available with a 3G option (HSPA+) in some countries outside the U.S. Otherwise, here stateside you're looking at wifi only for now. Pick one up online or at Best Buy, October 30th.

Check back for the full review after we've had some time with the 8" version of the device.
