PHOENIX -

A suspected car thief led police on a pursuit early Thursday morning through morning traffic. He struck one car along the way before he crashed into a power box.

That crash knocked out power to hundreds of people near 14th Street and Maryland.

Traffic in the southbound lanes of Northern near 14th Street was at a near-standstill Thursday morning after an SUV crashed right into an electrical cabinet.

"I was cooking breakfast for the kids, just then boom everything went out," says Ernest Lowe.

APS says more than 1,000 customers lost power for a few hours as a result. Traffic lights were out too.

According to Phoenix Police, the SUV that hit the box was struck by a stolen pick-up first.

"The suspect failed to stop for officers and continued to flee in this vehicle," says Sgt. Steve Martos.

It all started at the convenience store in the area of Maryland and 12th Street. Phoenix Police say the suspect jumped into pickup truck and stole it while the owner was inside.

"While he left the car running he saw two individuals, one was a driver, one hopped out and took off in his car," says witness JP Weng.

JP Weng and his wife spoke to the victim, who said he left his truck running while he was in the store because it was cold out. Weng says the suspect was arrested near his home where the truck stalled out.

"He was on foot being chased and he apparently ended up in one of our neighbor's yard. The police dogs got him and bit him on his leg."

The suspect was taken to the hospital and faces several charges. The driver of the SUV only suffered minor injuries.
