Police: Man shot in the elbow after refusing to hand over wallet

GILBERT, Ariz. -

A sleepy Gilbert community was jolted awake by gunshots. Police say a man was shot during an attempted robbery Saturday night after refusing to give up his wallet.

Shreds of crime scene tape are the only indication of a crime happening in this quiet Gilbert community.

"Everyone I would say about 30 houses.. we all get together routinely, so yeah, everyone knows everybody," said Tony Row.

But around 10 p.m. Saturday, people living near Guadalupe and Val Vista were startled after hearing "what sounded like fireworks, but ended up being gunshots.. three of them to be specific," said Stu Paulasc.

The victim told police he was in his Toyota Prius, waiting to pick up a friend, when two men walked up and demanded his wallet.  Investigators say he wouldn't give them his wallet, so they shot him in the elbow.

Police say the shooting happened at the corner of Rock and Blue Marlin.  A woman living in a nearby house says her teenage daughter and her friend were sitting on a curb when they heard the gunfire and though somebody was shooting at them.

"Peaceful neighborhood.. nothing ever happens here," said Paulasc, who lives a few doors down from where the shooting happened.  He says many heard the shots and came out to see what was going on.

"They were out until people started stating there are individuals on the loose and they are doing an active manhunt.  People starting going in, locking their doors, staying away from windows."

Row added, "Heard a helicopter overhead, then my entire bedroom lit up like a Christmas tree."

Police used a helicopter, scouring the neighborhood, looking for the gunmen who are still on the loose.

"Obviously a scary experience for us, my family and the neighbors," said Paulasc.

Police only have a vague description of one suspect, who the victim said was Hispanic.
