No issues reported in Detroit election, federal monitors in place

DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

A federal prosecutor will lead efforts to monitor elections in Detroit and Hamtramck to protect against discrimination.

U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade said in a statement Tuesday that Assistant U.S. Attorney Pamela Thompson has been appointed to serve as District Election Officer for the Eastern District of Michigan.

The Justice Department earlier said it would monitor Tuesday's elections in the cities to protect against discrimination "on the basis of race, color or membership in a minority language group."

McQuade says Justice Department personnel also will monitor survey polling sites in Flint to ensure compliance with a settlement agreement under the Americans with Disabilities Act to ensure access for all voters, including those with disabilities.

Fox 2's Alexis Wiley spoke with attorney Krystal Crittendon about the need for the federal monitors. Crittendon responded saying the need was "absolutely" there, especially after the problems with the primary election results.

The official voter turnout reported at 7 p.m. was 18 percent, and is expected to pick up in the after-work hours before the polls close at 8 p.m.

The expected percentage for voter turnout is 21 percent.
