DETROIT (WJBK) -- PDETROIT (WJBK) -- Police say a decapitated and burned body has been found in a vacant school on Detroit's west side.

A tip led investigators to the body about 2:30 p.m. Sunday inside the former Cody Ninth Grade Academy at Southfield near W. Warren. The building is boarded up and covered with graffiti.

Police say the remains were so badly burned and decomposed that officers couldn't determine whether they were of a male or female. We're told the head had been removed.

The Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office plans to work to identify the remains, but the body has no usable fingerprints and no teeth are available for testing. Investigators are asking anyone with missing family members to come forth and give a DNA sample in hopes to help identify the body.
