Farmers Feed Turkeys Beer To Encourage Growth

Posted: Updated:

For a lot of families, turkey is the focal point of the big meal on Thanksgiving. And now, some farms are serving beer to the birds.

Farmers say beer makes turkeys bigger and makes them taste better. PETA calls it inhumane, but poultry experts say that beer probably doesn't actually harm turkeys.

"I don't know exactly how much beer each turkey is consuming, but it would have to be a lot in order for it to kind of have the same effect as too much beer on people," said Carl Majewski, field specialist in food and agriculture at the University of New Hampshire. "I imagine it's not enough to really make them tipsy or anything like that. It's just enjoying a beer with their meal. Why not?"
