MESA, Ariz. -

Mesa Police say an altercation between two groups of people apparently led to the fatal shooting of a 30-year-old woman whose body was found on the street near a home.

Sgt. Tony Landato says the woman was found dead in the street with at least one apparent gunshot wound around 3 a.m. Tuesday near University and Stapley.

One group is believed to have gathered at the home and at least two other individuals were in a vehicle.

A neighbor says he heard shots ring out and then a woman shouting for help.

"It was like seven shots.. a lady was screaming help, help, help -- it was three times," said Augustin Martin.

Officers say it's unclear if it was a one-sided shooting or an exchange of gunfire between the groups -- some in a house and some in a car, truck or van outside.

"I heard.. I thought someone knocking on the door.. I was scared, we didn't come out until we saw the police around it," said Anna Martin, a neighbor.

Police don't know if there was a gunfight or just a one-sided hail of bullets.  The question almost doesn't matter to one man who came by to work on his property.

"You know, the neighborhood is the neighborhood.  It is what it is.  This isn't Paradise Valley for Chrissakes, you know what I'm saying?" said Gus Seaton.

No one is in custody at this time, but police questioned people at the scene. They're also trying to locate the people in the vehicle to question them.  Officers believe there are no dangers to others outside the groups.

The victim's name was not released. According to Landato, she was among the people at the home.

If you have any information about this case, call the Mesa Police.
