Questions raised about campaign season loan to Mayor Kasim Reed

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

A campaign season loan made to Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed is raising a number of questions.

To some, the loan by a longtime girlfriend of Reed made during his first bid to be mayor raises questions of ethics. The mayor and his now former girlfriend say it was purely personal and no one's business.

Click the video above to watch the report that Fox 5 Senior I-team reporter Dale Russell has been investigating since early 2012.

Joint Statement from Mayor Kasim Reed and Joy Rohadfox regarding loan made during his 2009 Mayoral Campaign

(Note: The FOX 5 I-Team received this statement 1 hour and 40 minutes after receiving Ms. Rohadfox's other statement)

Dale Russell's misleading report contains accusations that are false and baseless. The facts are clear: Joy Rohadfox and her firm received no special treatment from the Reed Administration.

It is undisputed that Kasim Reed had nothing to do with the city procurement and award she received before he was ever elected Mayor of Atlanta.  Ms. Rohadfox has been the President of a successful business for more than a decade. The only thing Ms. Rohadfox did wrong was refuse to participate in Mr. Russell's efforts to discredit Mr. Reed.

She is a partner in a joint venture whose contract was renewed just as virtually every contract of this type is renewed.  There is absolutely no evidence of impropriety or favoritism of any kind concerning the renewal of this joint venture agreement.

He provided legal services before he was elected mayor to a woman he had dated for some time.  After the election, they mutually agreed that  Reed would return all monies paid to him by Ms. Rohadfox so that they would have no further financial involvement in order to avoid even the appearance of a business conflict.

The only "news" here is about Kasim Reed's private life.  It is unfortunate that their personal relationship has been manipulated into a desperate attempt to malign both the Mayor and Ms. Rohadfox.

Statement from Joy Rohadfox, owner of Rohadfox Construction Control Services Corporation, regarding her 2009 loan to Kasim Reed.

In 2009, I made a personal financial transaction to a candidate for mayor with whom I was engaged in a long-term relationship. The financial transaction was personal, and so are any details pertaining to it.

The personal financial transaction was not intended to influence or benefit his fledgling campaign. Neither was it intended to benefit my business.

The work that my firm performs for the City of Atlanta was won through competitive bids during the previous administrations of Mayor Shirley Franklin, predating the current administration.

In making a personal financial transaction to the candidate, it was never my intention to influence his political campaign or to benefit my business. In the event his longshot candidacy was successful and the personal relationship had continued its course, my intent was to recuse my business from any and all work with the City of Atlanta.

There are no longer any financial relationships of any kind between the Mayor and I. Our long term relationship ended on an amicable note and we remain friends.
