Demand for farm fresh turkeys is growing for Thanksgiving

DEWEY, Ariz. -

Thanksgiving is just a week away.  A lot of people are heading to stores to pick out their bird, but there's a new trend: getting farm fresh turkeys.

More people are choosing to go to the farm to pick out their turkey than their local grocery store.

One farm in northern Arizona is seeing this first hand with a huge request for the birds and it's paying off for them.

For the past six months, these turkeys have shared Mortimer's front yard.

"They're just kind of a slow, quiet bird, they just gobble around," said Sharla Mortimer.

The family owns and operates Mortimer Farms in Dewey, which is about an hour and a half north of Phoenix.

"Spent a lot of time with them, taking good care of them," she said.

This is the first time they've ever raised turkeys for Thanksgiving, but it's something their customers have been asking for.

"Keep getting more and more requests for turkeys so here we are turkey season."

Mortimer says they've seen a big trend in people wanting fresh, farm raised turkeys instead of frozen store bought birds.

"Buy buying locally, you can really know your food.  You can know your farmer, know your rancher and be able to have that relationship that people are looking for in your food," she said.

Mortimer Farms has been raising 200 turkeys since they were just day old babies, but because of the overwhelming response for these fresh turkeys for Thanksgiving, next year they're planning on raising 400 turkeys.

"There has just been such a huge response," she said.

The fresh turkeys cost considerably more, but more people are choosing to open their wallets for the freshest organic birds available.

"People are interested in knowing where their food comes from," said Mortimer.

The fresh turkeys are never frozen and because they're farm raised, they are a bit more expensive.  These particular turkeys are about $3.99 per pound.

Mortimer Farms has orders from people across the valley.
