Town Watch Group Walking Center City After Sex Assault

Town Watch Group Walking Center City After Sex Assault

"We walk the streets mainly for eyes and ears for the neighborhood. We look for drugs, it could be someone breaking into a house. We also look for things like broken manhole covers and street lights out," said Karen Adams. But after hearing a 29 year old woman was sexually assaulted last week in Center City this group is taking more aggressive steps to help protect residents. Adams heads the Public Safety Committee for the Washington West Civic Association.

"It kind of prickles the hairs on the back of our neck a little because it is rare," said Adams who also says it's frightening to know that at 11 o'clock at night in a busy area of restaurants and clubs someone could get away with such a violent crime. Police say it happened on the 1200 block of St. James Avenue when the victim left a bar to feed the meter.

"First we were surprised then we were horrified that it happened. We were angry that it happened," said Adams.

Larissa Prewitt is also concerned. She says, "I worry about walking home at night, walking to the grocery, my friends and my family's safety." She's part of the town watch too. They always carry radios but now they're also armed with flyers to hand out with a description of the suspect.

"Be aware, be aware, be aware. Keep your phone in your pocket, don't text or talk or walk at the same time. Be aware of who is behind you and in front of you," said Prewitt.
