D.O.T. learns from 'Snowmaggedon'

DECATUR, Ga. -

Who could forget "Snowmaggedon" here in Atlanta in 2011? The Georgia Department of Transportation took a lot of criticism for how they responded that week.

Officials say they've learned from their mistakes and they're ready to battle snow and ice.

Snow may be a rarity in Georgia, but in 2011 a major snow and ice storm crippled many of metro Atlanta's roads and interstates. "We've been very honest since then, we didn't do everything that we needed to do given the storm that presented itself" says Natalie Dale, Spokesperson for the Department of Transportation.

After looking at what worked, and what didn't, officials have been ramping up their plans and equipment.

"We went back and looked at everything we could have done, we looked at everything that went wrong" Dale added.

Last year, the state bought two 225,000 tow plow trucks to help clear roads faster. They've also increased salt and brine production and storage across the state. In addition, a  2,000 gallon brine truck was created for free from spare parts around the state.

The department says they will also have private contractors on standby for when winter weather moves our way.

Crews have already worked more than 116 hours since the day before thanksgiving to clear snow and ice: most of that in north Georgia.
