Condoms, pregnancy tests among most-shoplifted items

Some on the list of the most-shoplifted items may surprise you.

Steve Schimmel of Pasteur Pharmacy on the Upper East Side keeps condoms out of normal arms reach in his store they're less likely to disappear.

The National Retail Federation released a list of goods stolen most from businesses. Cosmetics rank high. As do men's razors, particularly the Gillette Mach 3 along with condoms and pregnancy tests.

Loss-prevention expert William Peeler says shoplifting's impact on law abiding consumers is that it forces them to pay more.

"Quite simply for the amount that has to be expended by retailers, they have to recoup that in some fashion," he says. "It's $300 on average per household is what it's costing consumers in the United States."

Peeler says retailers big and small spend about $28 billion a year to fight shoplifting or "shrinkage," the industry term.

Schimmel has increased security especially for the holidays and strategically placed other hot targets to reduce chances of theft. He keeps Rogaine and pregnancy tests, which also made the list, behind the counter.

Industry experts say that retailers are starting to more aggressively go after shoplifters with prosecution. The message to would be thieves? You may want to think twice before you reach.
