PHOENIX -

It was a terrible crash -- a man slams into a power pole -- killing him.  Making matters worse, it put a lot of parents in a tough spot Monday when they suddenly had to figure out what to do with their kids because the crash shut down a nearby elementary school.

The crash happened near McDowell Road and 28th Street right in front of Creighton Middle School.

At 1 a.m., 31-year-old Yusuf Whitman-Hill's 4,000 pound Chrysler 300 was flying down McDowell Road -- police say up to 90 miles per hour -- it smashed head-on into a power pole.  The engine exploded out of the car, the transmission hurled 100 feet, shreds of metal, shards of glass were scattered down the street -- an abstract sculpture with a dead man underneath.

The crash unnerved people who live close by.

"Oh yes, they are going way too fast on this road in general , everybody drives too fast, I think," said Jess Hart, who lives in the area.

The crash scene shut down McDowell Road for almost 12 hours and knocked out power in the area.  Salt River Project crews spent the morning turning it back on.

Students made the most of the unexpected time off.

"Um.. see TV, go in the pool or the hot tub and play with my dogs," said Jaquelin Camarena, a student.

But Jaquelin's mother Aida had a different perspective.

"Pues si pero es una tragedia por otro gente."

Yes, it's a little vacation, but it's because of a tragedy, she said.

McDowell Road reopened around Noon.  Power has been restored to the area.

There are 850 students, kindergarten through eighth grade, attending Creighton Elementary.  School will be back in session Tuesday.
