Pa. Pastor Rebuked For Gay Wedding Looks To Future

Posted: Updated:

A minister who was punished for officiating at his gay son's wedding has revealed his plans for a future with the church.

Reverend Frank Schaefer has been ordered to turn in his religious credentials on Thursday if he will not agree to follow church doctrine.

The United Methodist Church appears to be facing a rebellion among its clergy locally as Reverend Frank Schaefer stands in defiance of Methodist rules.

And in doing so, Reverend Frank Schaefer, a Central Pa. Methodist, may be stripped of his right to minister in his church of more than two decades all because he performed the wedding of his son to another man.

The Methodist Church accepts gay members, but rejects the practice of homosexuality.

Schaefer was suspended for 30 days after a trial last month and ordered to follow church doctrine or surrender his credentials to minister.

Today, 44 members of the Philadelphia area Methodist clergy sang hymns, stood in support and issued a letter to the region's Bishop to stop church trials and not punish Schaefer during a board meeting planned for Thursday.

This, while an openly gay Methodist expressed pain and anger.

" Methodist Bishop Peggy Johnson in a statement wrote the church's LGBT members are of sacred value and acknowledged church rules are discriminatory. But gave no hint of what may happen Thursday.

In a statement, the area's United Methodist Bishop Peggy Johnson wrote:

"Our LGBT sisters and brothers are of sacred worth regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity."

And while acknowledging some of the church's rules on LGBT people are discriminatory, she gave no hint of what may happen in Thursday's meeting.
