Butts County Sheriff's Office delivers gifts

BUTTS COUNTY, Ga. -

Santa Claus took a break from last minute preps at the North Pole for a special event in Butts County on Monday. Members of the Butts County Sheriff's Office delivered hundreds of toys, tablets and other gifts to local families.

Butts County Sheriff Gary Long wanted to do something special for kids who wouldn't otherwise have a Christmas. He launched the "Sheriff's Cause with Santa Claus" program about a month ago.

"I wanted to do something here locally that would impact directly and of course I see kids across the community who, otherwise if we didn't do this, wouldn't get Christmas," said Long.

The gifts were made possible thanks to generous donations from the community, area businesses and churches.

"We've been absolutely blessed when it comes to the toys and the monetary donations," Long said.

The sheriff was overjoyed by the response he received this year and is already looking ahead to next Christmas.

"When I took office, one of my biggest things was building a relationship with the community," Long said. "I feel that we've got a cycle that we have to break. We need to reach the children at an early age that way when they get grown, they know who we are. I don't know of a better way to reach the community than through this."

The sheriff says his staff and the community did a great job making it all happen.
