LITHONIA, Ga. -

A single mom was left empty-handed just two days before Christmas after thieves stole gifts from her Lithonia home.

Kanita King returned to her home on Sunday to find that presents had been stolen from under the family's Christmas tree. King said thieves took the presents and television sets from their Ashley Vista apartment while the family was away on an overnight trip.

"Watches, boots -- every gift we had. they took from us for Christmas. They destroyed our Christmas," King said.

The mother of three believes whoever swiped her holiday cheer had a key to get inside.

"Because both the doors were locked. There were no signs of forced entry," King said.

King is struggling to explain the meanness to her daughters.

"To come in here and just take -- that's the part my daughters don't get. They don't understand that part," King said.

The family is trying to focus on the reason for the season, but King said the violation is too much to bear.

"They know the meaning of Christmas is not about the gifts, but what child does not deserve a gift on Christmas day," King said.

King is asking the thief to return the gifts before Christmas.
