ATLANTA -

Police are searching for the culprits behind a smash-and-grab robbery in southwest Atlanta.

The thieves backed a car into a Chevron convenience store near Northside Drive and Metropolitan Boulevard. They almost hit a customer inside before they made their getaway. Clerk Latif Seidu said the customer could have been killed.

"Very close. It was a narrow escape. Very close," Seidu said. "She's very lucky. She's fortunate to be alive."

Manager Andy Virani was amazed at how quickly the masked men swiped the money machine from the station.

Atlanta Police say in addition to the gray van that rammed into the store, a second white van, full of suspects was on the scene as a lookout. A short time later, officers found both vans on Interstate 20 at Hamilton Holmes Drive. Both had been stolen from Molly World Academy in southwest Atlanta. Virani believes he saw the robbers casing the place hours before the smash-and-grab.

The store plans to remain open as it is repaired.

Police are on the lookout for as many as eight people behind the theft.
