DeKalb Co. 911 director admits mistake in response to daycare break-in

Posted: Updated:
DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

DeKalb County's 911 director is speaking out in response to reports that a 911 operator failed to dispatch officers during a break-in at a Stone Mountain daycare center.

The suspect was apparently still trying to get into the building when the owner and other family members called 911.

Daycare center operator Latorsha Morgan said she is outraged after police failed to respond to a recent break-in at the Stone Mountain facility.

Morgan got a call from her alarm company Friday saying the alarm at the Morgan's Christian Academy was going off. She told them to dispatch police.

Morgan, her husband and cousin drove to the daycare and came face-to-face with the burglar, who was apparently still trying to force his way into the building. They called 911 only to be told no officers were available to dispatch...

Officers never showed up and the suspect got away.

DeKalb County 911 spokesperson Marshall Mooneyham disputed Morgan's account of what happened, but admitted the dispatcher made a mistake in not sending an officer.

"Based on information we received the operator received, led us to basically process the call at a lower priority than it should have been," Mooneyham said. "It would have been processed as an in-progress call, which would have elicited a priority one response, which means a car would have been dispatched to the call."

Mooneyham said it's not clear whether the dispatcher failed to ask the right questions, or if Morgan made it clear that the suspect was still on the property.
