Newborn baby's broken leg sparks investigation

ATLANTA -

A newborn baby is at the center of a police investigation. The girl was born days ago, but has a broken leg.

Nekisha Fears said her daughter Harmoni was the picture of perfect health when she was born Jan. 7 at Atlanta Medical Center. On the morning of Jan. 9, Fears said she could tell something was wrong with her newborn's red and swollen left leg.

"As I touched it, she starts to cry," Fears said. "And when I looked at it, it didn't look right. Like she kicked her leg out, so when she kicked it out her right leg extended but the left leg was bent."

Fears said doctors diagnosed Harmoni with a broken leg Thursday morning and placed the baby girl in a harness to keep her stable and comfortable.

The 32-year-old mother of five said she knows how to handle newborns and wouldn't intentionally harm her child. She said she was surprised and offended when, according to her, a hospital social worker suggested Fears is to blame for her daughter's injury.

A spokeswoman for Atlanta Medical Center said the staff followed hospital procedure to report the incident. Division of Family and Children's Services was also called into investigate.

Fears said she has no idea what happened to her child. She said she had delivered all her children at the hospital.

"That's why I'm back here, because I felt comfortable here," Fears said.

The spokeswoman for Atlanta Medical Center said that she cannot discuss the details of Harmoni's injury for privacy reasons, but said the hospital staff is cooperating with all investigations.

Fears said that she's cooperating and hopes police, the hospital and DFCS will quickly determine what happened to her newborn.
