Elderly man in Hamtramck threatened with fines, jail time for unshoveled sidewalk

(WJBK) -

Ben Jaros, born, raised in and still living in Hamtramck, recently received a letter from the city regarding his unshoveled sidewalk. The letter says Jaros could face a $500 fine and 90 days in jail if the sidewalk is not shoveled. Jaros is 96 years old.

"Put me in jail for this? I never committed a crime in my life and they're trying to make a criminal out of me!" Jaros says. "If I shovel it, I get a heart attack maybe, I don't know."

The notice came from the Code Enforcement Office and gave Jaros a deadline to shovel, yet Jaros notes most of the streets in Hamtramck have not been taken care of yet.

Neighbors pitched in and helped clear Jaros' sidewalk.

Isom contacted the Hamtramck mayor's office. Isom reports Mayor Karen Majewski told her she was not aware this was going on, and had she have known she would have gathered volunteers to shovel the snow for the elderly and the disabled. She says no senior in Hamtramck will pay any fine or go to jail for not shoveling snow.

The mayor also said the reason the city was enforcing this code is because it does not have the funds to plow.
