Tech Check: Prepaid phone plans

Tech Check: Prepaid phone plans

ATLANTA -

You can save almost 50 percent on your mobile phone bill by going with a prepaid plan. Those prepaid phones have gotten a bad rap over the years with a lot of people considering the phones cheap, but prepaid is getting a second look in the tech world these days.

Yahoo! tech writer Rick Limpert is a recent convert. He has been trying a Boost Mobile phone and as a tech writer, he needs a good smart phone.

"I need a phone that meets my needs and after one month this phone is," said Limpert.

Looking on the Boost website, you can find that you can get a brand new iPhone 5S, but you have to buy the phone upfront for $529. However, the monthly cost for voice, texting and data is $55 and there is no contract. A co-worker who has the same phone and a two-year contract with major carrier says she'd save over $1,000 by switching to the plan.

"The stigma is gone. The stigma is gone and there are some great deals to be had out there," said Limpert.

And these prepaid plans use the big carriers' network such as Verizon, AT&T and Sprint, which is what Boost uses.

"(It's the) Same network. So, you are getting the same service you would with AT&T, your Sprint or your Verizon plan," said Limpert.

Here's a Windows phone from Aio Wireless. The smartphone costs $99 up front, but the service is as low as $45 a month.

"A lot of first time smartphone buyers are going with Aio. All of their customer service is base in Alpharetta," said Limpert.

Of course, the big name in prepaid phones is the Trac phone. If you need a no frills cellphone, you won't believe how cheap this is.

"They start plans at $7 a month. $7 a month? And this phone cost $4.99," said Limbert.

Some of the companies to look at for these prepaid phones:
- Aio Wireless
- AT&T GoPhone
- Boost Mobile
- TracFone Wireless
- Straight Talk from Walmart
- Virgin Mobile
