Gov. Snyder proposing $350M to aid DIA and pensioners

Gov. Snyder proposing $350M to aid DIA and pensioners, not all are on board

The Governor hopes the state government can raise about $350 million to match foundation monies pledged this week to keep the DIA open and to help pensioners avoid hits in their monthly checks. But Republican Senator Roger Kahn is not on board, and he is critical in the debate. In fact, he says the pension debt is $3.5 billion and what the Governor proposes doesn't get the job done.

He puts it a little differently to Fox 2's political insider Tim Skubick: "It's like peeing in the ocean."

Not having the Republican chair of the Senate budget committee is a setback, but it may not be fatal. The Governor has pitched his concept to legislative Democrats, and he can pretty much count on their support.

"I'm very encouraged by the conversations that are happening. I think that this is an extremely complicated problem that is going to deserve a thoughtful solution and I want to be a part of that," says Senator Gretchen Whitmer.

As for the Democrat who hopes to unseat the Governor, he contends the pensions had constitutional protections which Snyder ignored.

"He swore an oath to uphold the constitution. He should have never put public employee pensions on the chopping block in the first place," says Mark Schauer.

The fate of the DIA and former city workers are now linked to what happens in Lansing.
