Hospital visit convinces lawmaker to support medical marijuana

Visit to sick girl convinces Ga. lawmaker to support medical marijuana

Posted: Updated:
MACON, Ga. -

A Macon legislator known as a staunch conservative is supporting a bill that would legalize the sale of medical marijuana in Georgia.  State Rep. Allen Peak said that all it took was a visit to a sick girl at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston to gain his backing.

Peake said he decided to draft the bill after a meeting with a family that has to take a 5-year-old girl to Colorado for medical marijuana treatment.

Rep. Peake said the legislation he proposed will be limited, said that he does not support the legalization of marijuana.

"This is strictly how do we help those citizens that are in critical or terminal conditions who can have their pain and suffering relieved by proper use, proper administration by medicinal physical of medical marijuana," Peake said.

An Insider Advantage/Fox 5 poll  finds that 51 percent of all Georgians support medical marijuana.

Still, Peake acknowledges that it will take a minor miracle for a bill to pass this session.
