NEW YORK (AP) - New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is touting an expansion of the city's paid sick leave law, the first legislative accomplishment of his administration.

The mayor and new City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito announced the bill outside a Brooklyn restaurant Friday.

More than 500,000 New Yorkers will receive five paid sick days a year thanks to the provision, which will be fast-tracked through the city council.

The expansion is a muscular display of the new, left-leaning government running the nation's largest city.

Mark-Viverito is de Blasio's ideological match and partner at the controls of government. She leads a council that largely shares de Blasio's liberal beliefs and could green-light much of his agenda.

The paid sick bill will be introduced at the city council next week.
