Johns Creek mayor furious after 'swatting' prank call

Posted: Updated:
JOHNS CREEK, Ga. -

The mayor of Johns Creek said he's not amused by a prank call that led to a massive police response on Thursday.

Officers rushed to a mansion in the Country Club of the South subdivision after someone called Alpharetta Police around 4:30 p.m. The caller said that three people had been shot inside a home on Carlisle Lane and demanded a $30,000 ransom for a woman supposedly being held hostage.

SKYFOX 5 was over the scene as dozens of well-armed officers escorted a babysitter and two children from the home. Police found that no one was being held hostage and there were no shooting victims in the house.

"This is just stupid. It's dangerous. It's stupid. I hope the person who did it gets caught," said Johns Creek Mayor Mike Bodker.

Authorities said what happened Thursday is part of a growing trend referred to as "swatting." It's when a call is made to mobilize law enforcement and emergency personnel to a home or business while those inside are unaware.

"Swatting is deadly serious and it's stupid, period," Bodker said. "I think that you have the opportunity for people to get hurt or killed and it's all because someone wants to get their jollys on seeing police mobilized."

Once caught, the person responsible for the call could be charged with misuse of 911 and false report of a crime. That person could also be forced to pay restitution, which could cost several thousand dollars.

Ten time Ironman, Dave Nazaroff recently rode 900 miles on his bicycle...from Nyack, New York...to Georgia. He didn't do it to get in shape, or to win a competition; he did it to raise money for a 11 year old Callie Truelove in Gainesville, Georgia.
