DETROIT (AP) -- An animal welfare group says Detroit has fewer than 3,000 stray dogs, a figure far below the widely publicized estimate of 50,000.

The Detroit Free Press says the World Animal Awareness came up with the latest estimate, based on a preliminary analysis of a survey that volunteers conducted in September.

Tom McPhee is executive director of the animal welfare group and says there's no way Detroit has 50,000 stray dogs. He says there are real problems with the care that pets get in the city of 700,000.

The group says that volunteers found problems such as dogs being dumped, not fed, tethered outside and abandoned.

It says volunteers surveyed 23 of 42 regions in the city.
