TRENTON, N.J. -

Snow is pounding New Jersey, and Governor Christie has declared a state of emergency.

Forecasters say the intensity will increase throughout Tuesday and as much as a foot is expected.

Dozens of schools have sent students home early Tuesday.

Speed is at a stand-still the New Jersey Turnpike between the Delaware Memorial Bridge and the George Washington Bridge. Traffic is barely moving. New Jersey Transit buses and trains are cross-honoring tickets. Air travelers should expect flight delays at Newark airport.

Gov. Chris Christie canceled his inaugural party.

"I've authorized state officials to take all necessary action to prepare, and my Administration will continue monitoring conditions throughout the remainder of the storm. I encourage all New Jerseyans to stay off the roads if possible so that our first responders and public safety officials can safely respond to any emergency situations," said Christie.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for snow developing mid to late morning Tuesday. Winds will cause areas of blowing and drifting snow.

Temperatures are expected to drop to single digits.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
