U-M's Black Student Union rallies for change on campus

(WJBK) -

Students in the University of Michigan's Black Student Union say the school needs to work on diversity and inclusion, and are demanding changes.

Nia Shumake says being a black student at the University of Michigan can be tough. She tells Fox 2's Alexis Wiley in one of her classes she is the only black student enrolled.

"It's really hard for us to go to class, and we get certain stares," she says.

Now the Black Student Union has released a list of demands which includes improving the university's race and ethnicity curriculum and creating more affordable housing in central campus. Plus they want the university to offer emergency scholarships to black students in need, and increase black representation on campus to 10 percent. Currently, black students make up nearly 5 percent of the student body.

If the demands aren't met by Monday at 5 p.m. the Black Student Union says it will be forced to take physical, but peaceful, action.

The movement is gaining support but also stirring up controversy and anger, especially from those who say these students' demands are unreasonable and unfair. But what does the university have to say?

"We share many of the concerns of the Black Student Union about our campus and we understand those concerns, and they're issues we continue to work on," Rick Fitzgerald, the university's Vice President of Student Life.

He plans to meet with the Black Student Union soon to talk about their demands.
