Good Samaritan Helps Stop TJ Maxx Burglary

Posted: Updated:

Police are trying to find a potential smash-and-grab suspect in Evesham, New Jersey. As Thalia Perez explains the would-be burglar would have gotten away with thousands of dollars in merchandise from a TJ Maxx if a good samaritan had not stepped in.

Police say it was a masked man that smashed the jewelry display at TJ Maxx with a large landscape rock. Police say he grabbed about five channel watches valued at almost $26,000 and shoved them into a bag.

He had a plan and he was focused. He went in directly to the counter. He knew exactly which case to go to," Evesham Police Lt. Joseph Friel said. "He throws it with his right hand right through the glass case. The front display shatters exposing all the watches."

But the suspect was quickly exposed too and didn't get away with anything because police say a member of the Air Force was shopping nearby and heard the commotion.

"He kinda watches what the suspect is doing. He decides to take action. He tackles the suspect. A struggle ensues at which time he rips off the suspect's mask and jacket,"Friel said.

Police say the suspect was almost in and out of the store in 30-seconds until the good samaritan intervened.

"It was dangerous to intervene. He was definitely a brave witness for doing what he did," Friel said.

TJ Maxx is located in a shopping plaza on route 73 in Evesham. Shoppers we spoke with today like Carla Chiarelli were surprised to hear about the smash and grab attempt, but say they noticed the jewelry display case was changed.

"It was really different to come in here today and see almost two shelves completely empty. I was under the assumption they were cleaning, "Carla said.

"TJ Maxx is my favorite store. And that's a worry. I hope they catch the guy soon," Shopper Stephanie Lawrence said.
