Mason's New Mask Features Flyers Teammates As Zombies

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

When the Flyers play the Bruins on Saturday afternoon, they'll have a new look. Well, at least one player will.

Goalie Steve Mason unveiled his new mask Friday, which features four of his teammates as zombies: Claude Giroux, Wayne Simmonds, Scott Hartnell, and Jakub Voracek.

Two equipment managers are on the back of the mask.

As for the ghoulish theme, Mason says the idea came from the artist, Fran Drummond.

"You know, I'll go through two or three helmets just for safety purposes," Mason explained. "And, you know, we obviously like changing things up. And he approached me with the idea of throwing a couple of teammates faces onto the helmet, and I was all for it, as long as the players were cool with it. I think they're pretty excited to be a part of something as cool as this."

His teammates, like captain Giroux, reacted to being immortalized as zombies.

"He asked me, and I was pretty pumped about it," Giroux said.

But he may not be so pumped when he hears how Mason thinks the new-look Flyers turned out.

"When you take a look at the guys I chose for the helmet, it's pretty easy to make them an improved look," Mason said. "Hopefully, they're not offended too much."

And it doesn't end with the mask. His goalie stick is part of the theme, too.

So, if he can't stop the puck, maybe the zombies will.

The Flyers are coming off two losses in the span of 24 hours, and three losses in four days.

They haven't lost four in a row since October, and they'll try to avoid that against the Bruins.

The team practiced Friday, hopeful to come up with a solution for their bad starts. In 17 games, the Flyers allowed 17 first-period goals, just part of the reason they're struggling lately.
