North Philly Shooting Suspect Shot By Law Enforcement

North Philly Shooting Suspect Shot By Law Enforcement

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

We're following breaking news Monday morning out of North Philadelphia where a man who allegedly fired at police officers was shot by law enforcement.

This happened just before 3 a.m. near the corner of 24th and Jefferson streets.

The suspect was shot multiple times and rushed to Hahnemann University Hospital. Officials said his vital signs were unstable, and he's listed in critical condition.

FOX 29's Steve Keeley reported from the scene that police there were using metal detectors to pull bullets out of the snow. They have a silver, loaded handgun in the snow, as well.

That is the gun that the 31-year-old suspect allegedly fired in the lobby of a Philadelphia public housing project around 3 a.m.

After aiming at and possibly firing a shot at the officers, he was shot four times by four different law enforcement officers from three different jurisdictions .

Police say that's when the man dropped that gun in the snow in an empty lot on Stewart Street.

And investigators say that could be the murder weapon used in a shooting over the weekend on Ridge Avenue, where a 23-year-old was found shot in the head, back and left leg before 2 a.m. Sunday. A white Lincoln Town Car was the getaway car.

A car matching that description was found at 24th and Oxford, near Monday's shooting scene, and police were preparing to process it.

"We had a witness from the Bloomberg homes that saw the suspect initially fire the shot in the lobby," Chief Inspector Scott Small said Monday morning. "That witness went to Hahnemann Hospital, he was transported there, and he positively identified our suspect as the individual that fired the shot inside the Bloomberg homes. So, not only did this individual fire a shot in the homes, on Judson Way, but then he pointed a loaded handgun, that we recovered, at the police, possibly firing a shot at the police, in the 2400 block of Stewart Street."

The police department's Internal Affairs Bureau is investigating the shooting, as is standard procedure.

K-9 and SWAT teams from all over responded to search for someone thought to be with the shooting suspect, but that person has yet to be found.

Why the 31 year-old fired his gun is still not known, police say.

But investigators say they have evidence, including video, putting their suspect from Monday's shooting at Sunday's murder scene.

The officers who initially responded to Monday's incident were Philadelphia Housing Authority police, who recently replaced private security guards at this housing complex.

When the officer assist call went out over police radio, the PHA officers got help from both Philadelphia police and the FBI, who for some reason happened to be close by.

So, an FBI agent was one of the four people who shot the suspect, Keeley reported.
