Gunman Wounded By Police May Also Be A Suspect In A Murder

PHILADELPHIA -

"It's just so scary, it's terrible how things happen."

Residents were still afraid to open their front doors Monday, even hours after a barrage of gunfire echoed through their North Philly neighborhood.

"Just a bunch of shooting that's all I heard," one resident told FOX 29.

The gunfire erupted as Philadelphia Housing Police, Philadelphia officers and an FBI agent opened fire at a fleeing suspect after investigators say he pointed a loaded gun at police.

"He definitely had a gun, we recovered a gun, a .380 is what was recovered," Commissioner Charles Ramsey said.

"The guns are just terrible," a neighbor said. "They need to do something about the guns."

It all started after a shooting near the Blumberg Apartments on Jefferson Street just a few blocks away. Police responded and chased the suspect they saw firing the weapon. As they entered the lot of Stewart Street following the 31-year- old man, gunshots were fired and the suspect was critically wounded.

"Right now it looks like a shooting that was justified," Ramsey explained.

Police now say the wounded shooting suspect was wearing a jacket taken from a 23-year-old man who was shot and killed during a robbery on Ridge Avenue on Saturday.

"Certainly our homicide detectives will want to talk to him about that as soon as he's able, ""Commissioner Ramsey added.

FBI agents and city crime scene investigators combed the scene for evidence all day Monday. The gun battle left this neighborhood shaken and some, who didn't want to be identified, worried about the safety of their families.

"It's a terrible thing and now I got two bullet holes in my fence back there," one neighbor said. "All we can do is pray, it's just so scary in the world here, it's very scary."

"We don't choose the time or the place," Ramsey said. "We're just fortunate nobody else was struck."

Police have not yet identified the suspect who was wounded.
