Gas Explosion Sparks Fire, Injures 3 In South Philly

PHILADELPHIA -

A gas explosion set three homes in South Philadelphia on fire, injured three people and forced many out of their homes.

It happened just before 7:20 p.m. Thursday on the 1800 block of Bancroft Street.

PGW says gas was shut off to all homes on the block, except for the house where the explosion took place.

Workers could not get inside because the homeowners were not there.

Neighbors say the explosion was so strong it knocked down book cases.

Investigators say they're not sure what caused the gas leak.

Two gas company workers were injured.

A resident was also taken to the hospital for minor injuries.

The Red Cross said anyone displaced by the explosion should go to True Gospel Church at 16th and Mifflin streets. So far, three families have been displaced, and some were not back in their homes Friday morning.
