NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - Actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead in a Manhattan apartment, according to the NYPD.

He apparently died of a drug overdose.  Fox 5's Lisa Evers reported that he was found with a needle in his arm.

The New York Police Department is investigating, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine exact cause of death.

Hoffman, 46, was found dead at his apartment at 35 Bethune St. in the West Village neighborhood of Manhattan.  Two NYPD officers stood on guard outside of the building as a group of reporters and photographers gathered outside.

The New York Times reported that the body was found by one of Hoffman's friends who had become concerned at not being able to reach him.

Hoffman was awarded an Academy Award for Best Actor for the 2005 film, "Capote."  He had a total of four Oscar nominations.

He recently attended the premiere of the film "A Most Wanted Man" during the 2014 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.

Hoffman had admitted problems with drugs in the past and had been to treatment for his problems.

A little bit of money, power and fame can unlock a whole world of hidden passageways and detours allowing stars to come and go discreetly. Seth Weisser has perfected private shopping inside his Soho vintage boutique What Goes Around Comes Around. Celebs slip in through the side door and descend into the vault. But the upper floor isn't too shabby either, featuring hundreds of rare Chanel and Hermes handbags.
