PennDOT Crews Battling Winter Storm

PennDOT Crews Battling Winter Storm

Posted: Updated:

PennDOT said yesterday that it is prepared for what's to come, and boy did it come! PennDOT says that although there's not an abundant supply of road salt, they do have enough for this storm.

As soon as the crews plow the roads, the snow accumulates again, so it's a little tricky. However PennDOT's Charles Metzger explained how the plows work.

The plows clear the roads, and then when two inches of snow accumulates on the interstates, they go down the interstate as a column and clear it before going back to their roads.

"This is an all hands on deck storm," Metzger said.

A total of 30,000 tons of salt is on the ground for PennDOT crews here in our region. Another 16,000 tons is on order. PennDOT just got a fresh shipment of cinder here to the yard yesterday.

The fear right now is that with the rain potentially coming down, there might be flooding, said Metzger.

PennDOT did not out pre-treat roads with the brine solution to save on salt. The crews hit the road as soon as the snow began to fall.
