"Steaks" Are High For Local Butchers In National Competition

It's like the "American Idol" of butchery -- 90 professional meat cutters from around the country showing off their skills in hopes of being crowned the very best. The prize? $20,000...and the title of Meat Cutter Of The Year!

The National Meat Cutting Challenge is part of the Meat Hero program -- recognizing Texas Roadhouse meat cutters. The competition starts next week in Florida -- and two locals will be there hoping to advance to the finals. Delfor Barrios of Marietta and Daniel Castro of Newnan will head to Orlando to put their skills to the test -- but only eight finalists will move on to the final round in April. So how does it all work? Each receives 30-40 pounds of beef, consisting of two sirloins, a filet and a ribeye. Judging is based on quality, yield, and speed, and the winner is the persdon who produces the most steaks, with the highest quality cut in the shortest amount of time.
